'Nigerian emeralds get their green color from vanadium, unlike the chromium and iron that typically color most emeralds. Discovered in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, in the late 1980s, these emeralds stand out for their unique mineral composition.

Emerald formation, which requires the presence of beryllium combined with chromium or vanadium, is considered a rare and remarkable occurrence due to the scarcity of these elements in the Earth's crust. In 1963, the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) issued their first lab report recognizing vanadium-colored green beryl as emerald, a classification now included in their educational curriculum.

Despite this, acceptance of vanadium-colored emeralds as true emeralds varies across the industry. This classification debate depends on who you ask and where you study. Vanadium imparts a slightly different hue to the emeralds compared to chromium, often resulting in a slightly bluish-green shade. Overall, while vanadium emeralds are less frequent than chromium-colored ones, their specific geological occurrences and the relative rarity compared to other types of emeralds make them a distinct and sought-after variety among gemstone enthusiasts.'
